Alcohol use disorder is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling your drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol or continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems. This disorder also involves having to drink more to get the same effect or having withdrawal symptoms when you rapidly decrease or stop drinking. It also includes binge drinking — a pattern of drinking where a male has five or more drinks powerless over alcohol within two hours or a female has at least four drinks within two hours. Binge drinking causes significant health and safety risks. This is a common question asked by people who are new in their recovery journey. There is often confusion about whether being powerless is a positive or a negative thing.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) operates under a set of 12 steps to achieve daily recovery. AA is a group of fellow recovering alcoholics who use the 12 steps and sponsorship to hold you accountable and offer you a daily reprieve from alcohol dependency. As a brand, we prefer to use person-first language to avoid defining people by their condition and the stigma that may come with it.
